Story 27

There’s Almost Nothing that Caring can’t Cure

ON 18 AUGUST 2021, LITTLE NANDU SAGAR WAS PLAYING IN the balcony of his second-floor home, when he slipped and fell 10 feet below. He was rushed to Apollo Hospitals in Seshadripuram, Bengaluru, and put under the care of Dr Mayuri, one of the best paediatricians at the hospital.

Nandu’s left side was badly injured, and his condition was critical. His nose and ear were bleeding as he lay unconscious on the hospital bed. After being intubated in the emergency room, he was taken for an MRI scan.

Ideally, Nandu needed to be admitted to a paediatric ICU (intensive care unit), but the hospital did not have one, so the doctors moved him into the general ICU. Any delay now could reduce his chances of survival.

Dr Hemal and Dr Anand joined Dr Mayuri in monitoring the child’s condition. The ICU and paediatric teams were told to be on full alert at all times.

A blood clot had formed in Nandu’s brain, impacting his vision. An emergency surgery was performed to remove the clot. Post operation, he was on ventilator support for 48 hours and gained consciousness slowly. Over time, with the personalized attention of the Apollo team, Nandu’s swelling reduced and his vision was restored. He was then moved to the general ward.

But within the next 24 hours, Nandu developed convulsions and had to be shifted back to the ICU and given ventilator support. His sodium levels, which had dipped, also had to be normalized. It took another two days for Nandu to feel well enough to go back to the general ward and another three to be discharged.

During his stay in the general ward, Nandu was pampered by doctors and nurses alike. One evening, he told Dr Mayuri that he loved Kinder Joy, so she surprised him with a bunch of them. The nurses gave him drawing and colouring supplies to keep him occupied.

Nandu made a miraculous recovery—all thanks to the efforts of Apollo’s healthcare team. Neither did they give up hope, nor did they let Nandu’s family lose faith. All through his recovery process, they made sure his parents were around so he could heal faster.

Nandu’s mother, Reena, who had fallen unconscious upon seeing her son soaked in blood, was also under the care of Apollo’s doctors. Besides treating her with medication, they held multiple counselling sessions to comfort her.

Nandu was given a grand farewell on his day of discharge. The Apollo team not only arranged a cake-cutting ceremony for Nandu, but also fed him his favourite ice cream.

Nandu’s parents were overwhelmed with the love and support of the Apollo healthcare team. They say that Nandu was reborn at Apollo hospitals, and consider his date of discharge to be his second birthday.

Nandu is doing well and participating in regular activities now. Thankfully, his accident did not result in any long-term or permanent neurological issues.
